Avalon Healthcare PPO in Florida

Hey Everyone! I am wondering what FL agents think about Avalon Healthcare's PPO product here in Florida? Their products compete against BCBS Plans 3, 4, & 5 with better pricing, underwriting, and commissions. What have your experiences been selling this product?

Increasing the first year comp from 20% to 30% is an act of desperation.

Be careful.

I am appointed with Avalon, but haven't put anyone on with them yet. The reason why I might write a few cases from time to time is because they consider individuals with Type 2 diabetes in places where Aetna does not do business. Otherwise, the premiums are not very impressive and the network is lacking.

I heard they got some investment backing as of late (good for claims paying ability), but I haven't had the time to research them yet.

The plans overall look OK and they offer a lot of choice, but they do cap ambulance 2K a year.

They gave me an attitude with an over the phone pre-screen and want you to fill out a form and fax it in. Very time consuming and not happy with that either.

How long as Avalon Healthcare been around? Never heard of them until now. Do they really insure or should I say give IC to type II diabetics? I did find their hgt and wgt guidelines and must say it's very liberal. I know BCBSFL has done well in the state but can another Florida only company do well? What do you all think?

Type 2 diabetics are given IC. Looks like Avalon was formed on 07/08/2005 according to the Florida Department Of State. They have recently received funding:

Avalon Healthcare Holdings Inc. has secured $3.7 million in equity capital from several sources.
Avalon raised $1.4 million from existing shareholders including private equity firm Inter-Atlantic Group, existing private investors and several new private investors. It also raised $2.3 million from Manning & Napier Advisors Inc., an independent investment advisor in Fairport, N.Y.

As for competing with BCBSFL, who knows. Seems their premiums are a bit high if you ask me, even in Tampa. Humana comes in much lower and GR beats them out too.

I don't even think you can compare. Avalon is much higher. When it was pitched to me by their rep, quality was more important than price. They recognize that they are in the ballpark with some comparable plans, but I think they can offer lower prescription deductibles.

Avalon has good plan designs. Whether or not they have the ongoing capital to back claims over time, that remains to be seen.

Any Florida Agents who are selling Avalon, please share your experiences. It's priced pretty good here in Lee county but how are they w/claims, comission etc? thanks

They are newer to Florida..put together by former execs from Oxford Health. They are not rated however re-insured well. I was told that they use First Health network (same as Mega...ewww) and Evolutions (EHS) in FL. I was recently contracted, however have not sold one of their plans. I was curious about their 'niche' as I need another so-so carrier like I need......The type 2 underwriting is key, however it's on a case by case basis. They'll qualify for bond soon and will be rated. At 30% it's temptous if correct for your client.
