Can Policemen buy life insurance?

I have been watching a 50 year old movie called Big Chase.

In it, a new Los Angeles policeman was declined for life insurance coverage.

Is that a real problem for a policeman, then or now, or was it just a staged event to support an emotional thread in the movie's plot line?

Probably a plot device.

There are companies that specialize in life insurance for high risk occupations.

They price it right, and write enough of it to be profitable.

Yes, police can get life insurance.

Probably through unions as well, where the risk can be spread among greater numbers of lives.
