Carrier Appt While Independent Producer

I'm a producer working for an independent agency with little over a year's worth of prior experience as a Farmers agent.

That said, are there any carriers (non-captive) in Texas that will appoint producers who are already employed at an independent agency? I have registered a business name, bank account, and joined the IIAT (looking for E&O). FYI, the agency principle is aware of my plans, and is supporting me.

Any and all help, words of advice, criticisms are welcome. Thank you

PS. searching Google and the Forum for answers led me nowhere. I guess there aren't too many people that are in or have been in this kind of situation.

PPS. my solution (for now) is to go on a mass application spree to see what I can get, but is very time consuming.

Hi there, just so you know you are not alone, just passed P&C Exam and finding it a little challenging, but am really hopeful, stay positive,
and don't quit.

My experience has been that before assigning you your own agency code, carriers will want you disassociated with your previous agency. That practice may vary based on the carrier. Check any contracts you've signed with your prior agency and/or the carriers to make sure you aren't contractually prevented from getting appointments with the same carriers.

Best of luck!

The companies I am currently appointed with unfortunately are strictly Health & Life, and I am not a captive agent. And Yes I do have my own agency in this particular field.

So you are trying to open up your own agency? Good start is to ask the carriers at your current company to see if they are willing to appoint you.

Just pursue your appointments & if it comes up...say you're segmenting off blah blah blah. If the rep wants to appoint you they'll make it happen. Disclose as little as possible.

I'm actually looking for carriers that my current agency does not have an appointment with and ones that will appoint a brand new independent agent.

To put it simply, I'm asking for a few company names. Trying to Google search this objective is like finding a needle in a haystack.

For what it's worth, all of the carriers the agency I work for represents does not appoint new agents. They all require I have an established book of business.

What about being a sub-producer for the agency and then buying your book from the agency in a few years OR talk to agency owner about possible ownership options? Either way, you use the established agency to acquire desired appointments as it will be much easier that way.

You'll still be talking nonstandard. But there is a large market for it in tx. Names you probably ought to have seen tbh. Gainsco, accc, assurance america, omni, uaic to name a few. There may be others in your state i am not aware of. You'll need a really good business plan to get any preferred carriers.
I'm not aware of any regional monoline property carriers that our state's share in common. you will probably need to ask someone local on that.

Also something you may want to ask someone more local about to see if it's any good in your area is Titan. Not victoria with a titan logo on id cards and apps, but titan indemnity co. It was called titan plus here. Was a midmarket product that was easy to qualify for and near standard pricing. Closed to new business in several states about 18 months ago. Don't know about tx. One of the reasons i left nationwide, i went from about an 80% closing rate on prospects who didn't qualify on standard to about 30%.

Is Victoria Titan not competitive in your area or just too non standard for the point you were making? Off topic I know but just curious
