I know this will probably open a can of worms, but...

Any recommendations for a TN agent as far as what health insurance company would be the best/preferred company with which to become appointed?

First of all, I don't sell in TN, so I don't have the answer. But, I am curious. Are you looking to get a career with one certain carrier or are you independent? If you are independent, why not either get appointed carrier direct or work through a GA?

I am sure someone here on the forum can give you the answer, but if you broker out, you will find out real fast which carriers are the most competitive in TN. In fact, your GA or FMO will tell you. It would be more of a service to your client if you have all the major carriers to offer them as underwriting outcomes will dictate which carrier is the best fit for you client.

Good questions.
To be honest I'm currently with one company, but don't actually have that "warm fuzzy" feeling about their products. I joined with them a few months ago, but haven't had much success with their program. I initially joined with them in order to get the training, info, etc. as I was (still am!) a fairly new agent... with only a few months since I've started.

How do you go about getting appointed carrier direct or finding/working through a GA?

Don't know what a FMO is???

I totally agree! If I have more options, I'll have more success in finding the product/price that fits the person.

Well, I worked captive for 6 months before I went independent. Working with a company helped me get comfortable on the phone, with appointment setting, presenting plans face to face, and all the rest of general insurance day to day work.

You can easily get affiliated with a GA anytime you wish. You may not be able to move your current carrier over depending on your contract and/or commission situation, but you can get all the rest of them.

You can learn plenty here on this forum. And, If you are selling health insurance, you might want to consider joining IHIAA-Home. There is a lot to learn selling at home over the phone I never knew until I learned the ropes.

FMO = Field Marketing Organization

You need a good GA. Health Choice One - Health Insurance, Medical Insurance, Life Insurance, Denver, Colorado is one of them. Goodluck!

tiburon,

In TN you have BlueCross BlueShield which is the main carrier-
17% annualized contracts if you go through a GA
They are a pain in the arse to get people pushed through underwriting but all in all pretty descent plans.

Right now Humana, Aetna and United HealthOne are very competitive and I write more of them than BCBS.

Assurant is another carrier that is here but generally only for a Maternity option right now.

Coventry is only in the Memphis area of TN but when they go statewide they will be a good option as well

If you need help with appointments let me know www.HealthGeneralAgent.com

I like the advance commish and needed the product training after going independent. Plus a few hundred bucks in free leads isn't bad either each month.

If working through a GA and are paid direct from the carriers and own your own book of business, plus get a release, it's hard to complain.

HCO has delivered all that so I am happy at this time.

Plus, if the GA rewards a top producer with GA contracts, I don't see why to go direct in the beginning.

Saleswolf,

Does your GA offer these releases and are there any preconditions to them?

Now that makes sense, f it's incentivised. Thanks!
