Some families may avoid marriage/filing joint to keep CHIP or Medicaid for children. Local solo working business + part time working fiance + toddler.
My recent calc's show that an unmarried couple with a child would, at least in this one example, overall fare better if filing a joint tax return. Although the deductible would be higher than CHIP, the savings on the total cost of coverage make up for the loss of CHIP eligibility, due to combined H/H income.
Now to check with carriers to see about domestic partner rules. HC.gov refers to the child being the bio offspring of both partners for them to recognize domestic partner as H/H for subsidy. Check. Pretty sure I just saw a check box on a BCBS app about domestic partner.
They will need to confirm how this would work with tax pro, of course.
