Any suggestions for a carrier that will write a mid 30's guy with Down Syndrome? Mother has to answer and sign for home since he has no communication skills.

I just checked with an UW at Standard Life & Accident. They go down to age 18. He said that he'd have to know more about the situation, such as: can he bath himself, talk a little, etc. He said that he wouldn't expect him to do a PHI. You can call their UW dept. at 800-671-9970 and see what they have to say. I don't think you've got many options. Good luck.

I thought somebody said recently that they tried that and Settlers wouldn't let the mother do the PHI for her son.

I missed it if they did. I did one similar a few years ago. It was a botched delivery and caused encephalitis or hydrocephalus.

I felt so bad for his father. He was trying to show off about how capable his son was. Unfortunately he was seriously mentally challenged from it. I understand he won a lawsuit against the doctor, but that doesn't fix his son.

I've done several of them. They have to be over age 25 and not need help with ADLs other than taking their daily meds.

There was a discussion a while back and somebody(was it JD?)said they wouldn't let them do it. Was it because they weren't a legal guardian?

I have a friend who has a son that's 26 and has Down's Syndrome. I guess he can do all the ADLs when I think about it, but no way could he do a PHI...he can't even say a sentence.

One problem with getting life insurance for someone with Down's at that age is that they're not expected to live that long, that's something that the UW I spoke to mentioned.

Where's JD?

They wouldn't let mother do the phi because she didn't have papers on them.

They went through with SNL. Can't remember the name of the product.

Didn't matter because the mother didn't have POA. Be sure to learn the carrier's rules for POA signature.
