Enrolling T65 who will likely be eligible for Medicaid

Situation: someone is turning 65 in February and already has A&B effective 2/1/25. This person is struggling financially and really can't afford the $185 premium. He isn't currently on Medicaid but in all likelihood will qualify. What do you do here? Apply for Extra Help/Medicaid first? Does anyone here have any experience with helping someone get approved for LIS before he even starts Medicare?

I usually walk away from this kind of business.

But yes, in the past I have helped customers with the process.

There is information about extra help that comes with the Medicare card in the envelope. You can over it with them and help then fill out the form.

There is more info about Extra help on Medicare dot gov

You can also go on your state's website and go over the process with the customer on how to enroll in Medicaid.

You can start the process during their IEP.

You'd think that doing all the extra legwork to help someone get a bunch of free sh!t would make them loyal and a customer for life, but you'd be wrong.

I tell them we'll sign up for a Humana ppo $174.90 part b refund. Apply for Medicaid the month you turn 65 (I'm in FL) and if you get Medicaid, I'll move you to a DSNP.
If not, you'll pay $10 to Medicare. Let's get this done now so you don't get charged $185

I have an entire section on my website that has links and info on Medicaid, LIS, applying for Medicare, etc.

I usually send them there and will sometimes show them with a screenshare.

It has all the links to Medicare.gov. Feel free to use it if you like.

IMHO as an agent you are crazy if you don't apply for medicaid for them.if you get the income/assets info and you know they will qualify.it doesn't take that long to do an online application and they usually will be a more loyal client. Also on the medicaid application ask if they have cash value life policy and is a perfect door opener to sell final expense.

Some carriers like UHC won't take away your tru up commission if you start them on the core plan the first month then switch them to a dsnp the next month once medicaid is approved. This is what i do in Florida because i know that florida medicaid won't be approved until their age in month even if you complete the application way before that. Most states will refund up to 3 months part B once they get approved so putting them on a part B refund plan for one month isn't always the best option if it exposes them to higher copayments.

Another option if you want to spend minimum time is to do an application for the LIS at social security and check the box to initiate an application for a medicare savings program.the downside to this is the state will send forms for the client to fill out and they will probably need help filling out those forms anyway.

This is the correct answer . I've applied for and spent many people over the yrs to apply for Medicaid and they've been turned down . You wait still the month their medicaire starts and many times they'll qualify for it under the Medicaid savings program .

Ha, I just knew what Chazm was going to say when I saw that question. Limozine didn't say what state he was in, but the Humana Full Access Giveback H5216-393 (PPO) is only available in Florida.

What state are you applying for the medicaid where they unexpectedly get turned down? In florida it has only happened to me a few times over the last 20 years in a scenario where clients income and assets were actually under the eligibility.Even have some approved where they are a little bit over the limit and still get approved but in these cases i tell the client they probably wont get approved so they don't get there hopes up.I have probably done about 500 applications for medicaid so fairly familiar with the process in florida

In Fl. and probably other states if you don't also get the Financial Information Release document also signed and submitted at time of the medicaid application and rely on the client to sign and return it when they get it mail from the state this can lead to failure to get approved.if i do an online application i will get the the hard copy disclosure form signed and upload it with application to speed the process up.The other reason for a decline would be if the person is just lying to you and the state medicaid finds out after a phone interview or if a person selected for a phone interview simply does not respond to request for interview.
