I know this question is really for "newby", but others with knowlege please step in. What is the main difference in a "family service counselor", and a "commuity service counselor"? Yes if you look at the names you can kinda figure it out, but what really makes their job descriptions different? Advantages and disadvantages to both?

Sounds like you are talking to SCI or Alderwoods about one of their sales positions.

It depends on if you are at a funeral home only location or a cemetery location.

Family Service Counselor will usually have "duty-days" at the funeral home or cemetery. If there is a call-in or walk-in you work with them to sell pre-need funeral or cemetery spaces, vaults, monuments etc. Usually a family service counselor is a weaker sales person who makes a salary plus bonuses (but not always.) He will usually have structured hours that he has to be in the office.

A Community Service Counselor is usually a fully commissioned salesperson who usually has more experience and runs direct mail leads, does seminars and generally drums up his own business. He usually doesn't have to account for his hours as long as he is turning in a decent amount of sales each week.

These terms are just general descriptions and the details change from company to company.

My advice, get away from those companies ASAP and work for an independently-owned funeral home. You will have a much better experience.
