Getting Back into the Industry

Hello all,

18 months ago I got my insurance licenses for both L&H and P&C. I worked for a local independent agent (I was his very first sub agent) selling P&C. While I enjoyed the experience, it didn't work out for various reasons, primarily because I just couldn't make enough money, and just feeling overwhelmed learning the various carriers and regulations etc.. He gave me a good commission split but provided zero training. He just gave me a phone and an x date list and said "go get'em tiger!" Seeing as I had zero sales experience it was kind of doomed from the get go. I think it was a good learning experience for both of us. The whole thing only lasted about 3-4 months.

Fast forward 18 months and I have been working at an inside sales job that is ok but I just have an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to own my own business. I've got some money saved up now so I am really considering getting back into the industry, as a captive agent this time, because I think it will receive much better training. When I was looking around a couple of years ago the AmFam Agent in Training program was really intriguing to me.... The one where you work under a successful agent for a couple of years while receiving a decent salary and then they release you to own your own business. The only problem was I had recently received a DUI and they wouldn't take me on at that time. The DUI was almost three years ago now.

Does anybody know what the cut-off point is regarding the DUI and working for AmFam?

What has your experience been with the AmFam AIT program?

What other programs out there are similar?

Any other advice you can provide?

Thanks!
