My grandpa and his brother (my Great Uncle Bill) were "breaker boys" at a West Virginia mine. They separated slate and other impurities out of the pile of coal as it came off the conveyor. As I recall, they were 6 and 8 years old. Extremely dangerous - boys were sometimes killed when they didn't get out of the way of the load fast enough.

Not a lot of mines down here in south Georgia so I don't have any relatives that worked in one.

But a few of my In-Laws are trolls ... they live under a bridge.
