Healthcare.gov Selling Your Information

The Associated Press reports that healthcare.gov–the flagship site of the Affordable Care Act, where millions of Americans have signed up to receive health care–is quietly sending personal health information to a number of third party websites. The information being sent includes one's zip code, income level, smoking status, pregnancy status and more.

The article says "outside firms are barred from using the data to further their own business interests" and that "there is no evidence that personal information has been misused." I'm not buying it, especially when story goes on to say, "a handful of the companies were collecting highly specific information."

I'm sure they'll use it for retargeting - there was an interesting comment on the "Google To Sell Insurance" thread where CTG said his wife figured out what he got her for Christmas by seeing the ads that popped up on unrelated websites while browsing. I never thought about it before he mentioned it, but I bet that happened to a ton of people this Christmas.
