Is it unprofessional to tell a client that "I may have to hang up with you at a moments notice - I have been on hold with the FAIR plan for over an hour and a half and if they answer, I got to drop you -Ill call you right back."

Is that wrong to tell the client?

Definitely not, assuming its a random call and not a pre-scheduled time to speak.

I don't see anything wrong with it. You could even ask them if it is okay with them, with something like: "I want to be upfront with you: I've been on hold with the FAIR plan for over an hour, and if they answer during our call, I will need to take it but I will call you back immediately after, if that is okay with you?" I would think most everyone would say, yes to that.

No, it is actually the right thing to do because you are being direct. If they got crappy toward you about it I would non-renew their sorry butts.
