Hi,
I might be in the wrong section for my question , but there is not Renters Insurance sections and the home owners sections doesn't work...

I'm seeking advice with following situation and hope I can get some advice even thought I might not be in the right place here:

I was with State Farm and had a claim with my renters insurance.

Now State Farm canceled my policy. My girlfriend whom I'm living with still wants a renters insurance but with state farm she wont be able to get a renters insurance because its under the same address.

She called another insurance company to get a quote and they asked here if she or anybody in here house hold ever had a claim. I'm assuming if she says no (because I live at the same address and I had a claim ) just to get the insurance , in case of an incident she would be covered ??

Its probably just a standard question. Call an agent, not an 800 number and tell them upfront what the situation is and what they recommend. I would call your car insurance agent first. Since they want to keep your car policy, plus there may be a multiple policy discount. Good luck!

First, what reason did they give for cancelling? There may be an issue that needs to be addressed before you or she are able to get new coverage.

I definitely would get a new policy though. Renters insurance is generally cheap, and you see how beneficial it can be.

.. The was no issue at all ... the only issue was I haven't been able to provide all documents ( receipts ) State Farm wanted to see for the claim but they send out a surprisingly high check anyway. But a couple of weeks later they cancelled the policy because of the claim.

If you were not able to provide proof of ownership / possession for the items listed on your claim, then that is likely the issue. You should be able to get the exact reason by calling State Farm.

On the other hand, was your girlfriend listed as an additional insured on your State Farm policy?

I'm sure an Agent who is willing to take the time could properly match the claim and still provide her with a policy. You may not be able to be named on the policy, however.

Any carrier you go to can still run a CLUE report and the claim will show up in that case. It is up to the carrier's guidelines whether you must be listed as an insured, and in turn, whether that event will either disqualify her or impact her premium.
