I have a lady that is on disability and has an under 65 supp. She turns 65 in January. Am I correct in thinking that she could enroll into any supp with any company now that she is turning 65? Just because she has had an under 65 supp does not exclude her from enrolling during her OEP into a different plan that also happens to be cheaper does it?

From what I understand...

When you get Medicare part B, you have a 6 month window to get a GI supplement.

Now that she is turning 65, she cannot just up and switch because her 6 months of GI from part B has passed.

AEP and OEP are for MA and Part D plans.

Sorry, guess I should have called my underwriter first. she said that when she turns 65 she gets an open enrollment period regardless of how long she has had part b.

There is a special section of the Choosing a Medigap Policy booklet, Section 6, that deals with this situation.

The pertinent part that you are asking about is on page 34.

"...if you are already enrolled in Medicare Part B, you will get a Medigap open enrollment period when you turn age 65."

People that had been on disability awhile but are now turning 65 also get an open enrollment for the PDP plan in 2009. Wow, the mind numbing certification that I had to go through with the insurance companies actually taught me something new....it stated that is new for 2009. In 2007 & 2008 they wouldn't give someone turning 65 that had been in DI for awhile a new open enrollment for PDP. Of course I had to find that one out the hard way in 2007
