Out Of Network Coverage

I have a client (7 person family) who travels extensively and is looking for a carrier that has the best Out of Network coverage.

Who would you recommend and why?

Good question Bob, why wouldn't a nationwide network suffice?

Sell them a carrier that owns there own network that is nation wide.
Anthem is in almost every state.

Out of country claims are usually covered by most plans but the policy works as an indemnity plan.

If it is a true emergency, out of network penalties are usually not applied. Even still, you may have additional out of pocket expenses that would not be fully covered.

Even for carriers that own their network, you have the issue of which network. Aetna, Humana and UHC all have their own network but they also have multiple networks.

Most of the polices issued by UHC/GR probably use the Choice Plus network which is highly discounted but has fewer providers from Choice, Choice Preferred or Select networks.

Similarly, Humana has a national POS network but they also have a half a dozen other networks as does Aetna.

If one is traveling in country and has a non-emergency medical need, the best advice is for them to call their carrier and ask for a referral to the nearest par provider.

PHCS is now part of MultiPlan which owns (and rents) other networks.
