Kirk Vartan pays more than $2,000 a month for a high-deductible health insurance plan from Blue Shield on Covered California, the state's Affordable Care Act marketplace. He could have selected a cheaper plan from a different provider, but he wanted one that includes his wife's doctor.

"It's for the two of us, and we're not sick," said Vartan, general manager at A Slice of New York pizza shops in the Bay Area cities of San Jose and Sunnyvale. "It's ridiculous."

Would he feel better about paying the premium if he was sick??

Perhaps we need health insurance plans for healthy people, and different ones for those who are sick . . .

that does seem to be the conventional wisdom these days..

Everywhere, not just Kalifornia?

This guy is "late 50's" . . . don't know his zip, but has Obamacare and manages a pizza place in the high rent area of San Jose, Sunnyvale (silicon valley).

How much for a HD plan in sunny Florida?

Article also says he could have chosen a lower premium plan but wanted one that "included his wife's doc".

I run into a relative few amount of people that have a true understanding of what insurance is when we first meet.

I guess it depends on what your definition of "high deductible" is.

For example though, I have a HDHP for my family of 4, and we pay $1,400/mo.
But I'm also in my 30's, wife in her 40's and we live in sunny north/central florida. So the cost of living isn't as bad as Kalifornia.

It's possible that paying the lower premium for him and then paying cash to see the doctor would have made more sense. But some people want everything covered by insurance, then complain about how high the premium is

HAHAHA we already have that for seniors - MAP (not sick) vs OM (sick) except if you get sick you might not be able to switch.

On a more serious note the plans for those who are sick would have horrific premiums since only sick people (for the most part) would be buying it.
