What are the options for someone who doesn't have the available funds or insurance to cover a funeral and final expenses? Does their family finance through the funeral home? Does the county or state bury them in "potters field"?

What about someone who dies who is homeless? Where does the body go and is it buried?

Dump the body, or put it in a big garbage bag and bury it in the back yard.

Seriously though, I've heard of passing the cup, having car washes, etc. to raise money for a funeral.

MN counties all provide about 2800-3500 for cremation or burial, so it is primarily cremation. That is why income parameters are important for my mailings.

It's called an indigent cemetary

Most counties have a small budget for indigent burials. The family members will be worked over pretty hard before the county will pay though. No funeral. Just a cemetery space and burial.

A lot of counties have gone to cremations instead of burial.. Not sure what the normal disposition of the cremains is.

Around us they don't force anyone into cremation. The families who financially need to be cremated are usually the most opposed to it. Burial doesn't really cost much more though as long as the city or county owns a cemetery and donates a space. It's just digging the grave and a plywood box covered with felt paper. There is no embalming or prep work.
