What options do Veterans have with MA?

HI Friends....

Newby question for the pros,

I've heard of Med B reimbursements plans available to veterans,--- but many VETS have already opted out of paying their Medicare premium and instead take the extra money.

  • Lets say 'Sailor Joe' turned 65 in 2022,... can he now take the MA PLAN offering part B reimbursement?
  • if so, is there a penalty AND will companies pay the MED B reimbursement anyway?
Your input is greatly appreciated...thanks

I'm a veteran. I've been on Social Security Retirement since age 62. I've had VA health care since age 65.

I enrolled in a Medicare Advantage policy 3 years ago. The premium was Zero. My Part B premium dropped by about $100 per month.

I have had no penalties and no issues with the MA coverage.

Even without VA health care, Sailor Joe can get an MA.

The MA companies are obligated by law (or contract) to pay a portion of the Part B premium.

There are no penalties for not enrolling in MA.

As long as one has Medicare Part B missing an MA enrollment period just means waiting for the next enrollment period to come around.

No.. but there is a penalty for those who 'OPT OUT' of paying Medicare Part B (which a lot of veterans do).

Get what I'm asking...?

Yes, there is.

It is foolish and costly to opt out of Medicare Part B without enrolling in an MA, if that's what they are doing.

Especially since the MA is zero premium and has the same coverage as Medicare plus some extra goodies like vision and dental.

Not sure. You started with MA and segued to Medicare Part B.

Caveat, not an agent.

Not unless he (or she (Sailor Jo) ) is enrolled in both Medicare Parts A and B.

No he can't get a ma plan right now . He must apply for his part b from Jan 1 to March 31 during the Gep election period . If he apples in Jan his part b will be effective feb 1 . He's going to have a lifetime part b penalty of around $55 a month if he applys in Jan 2026 . The only way to avoid the penalty is be approved for any level of Medicaid . Does he need part d rx coverage ? If not sign him up for a honor plan with $100-$150 part b giveback to cover that penalty

Law has nothing to do with it, nor does military service. If a person enrolls in an MAPD with a Part B Giveback, that giveback amount will be applied toward their Part B premium.

Thanks for your service.
