What accounting software do you feel is the best value? This would be for my agency and personal finances.

Finally crawling out of the 20th century system I have and looking for some proven suggestions

Unless you really want to go to a full-bore double-entry system like Quickbooks ... which can become a "career" in and of itself, I recommend the Moneydance system. It runs on PCs and Macs and Linux, is cheap, and works well.

If you are going to down/up load to your bank you need to know what protocol they use... and it could be the proprietary Intuit (Quicken, QB, etc.) one in which case you might be "forced" into using one of those programs. I don't know if Moneydance works with Intuit protocols. Personally, I found bank up/downloads more problems then they were worth and I would just duplicate the data if necessary, but YMMV.

One suggestion. If you are going to have a payroll, don't do it yourself (i.e. Quickbooks.) You should use a payroll service.. either a local one... or one of the (rather expensive) national ones (PayChex, ADP) or an on-line one. I used PayCycle for many years and thought they were great. If I were going to do payroll again today I'd use one of my CPA or bookkeeping clients. Most will charge about what the online services charge, but they will also refer clients to you.

I probably should have been a bit more specific. Payroll is contracted through a local accounting firm. I mainly want to be able to track finances with a keystrike versus an ugly mound of paper. I have been very unorganized in the past and am trying to get a better handle on expenses/expenditures etc. so I can operate a bit more on autopilot.

Thanks, are any of you using a system for both personal and business ?

Although I have reservations about Quickbooks, I do use Quickbooks Pro. I have used Peachtree and all the others, so QB is about as good as it gets.

If you don't need payroll and a few other bells and whistles, you can probably get away easily with just Quickbooks. The Pro version may be overkill.

One warning. If you can find an older version of Quickbooks, like on Ebay, then do that. All the reviews of Quickbooks Pro 2009 are horrible and that may apply to regular Quickbooks 2009 as well. I almost upgraded to Pro 2009 because it was half off, which is rare. After reading the reviews from users, it became clear why they were trying to move it.

I was a sole prop for sixteen years, used Quicken and have prepared my own taxes including my schedule C using TaxAct.

In 2006 I incorporated and started using Quickbooks Pro for the business (still use Quicken for my personal checkbook). QB Pro is easy to use. I now have a CPA prepare my corp return; I simply email him a copy of my QB file. I still do my personal returns.

Also, I've used several payroll companies for my one employee - me - and settled on ABC Payroll last year. They are terrific. Best service and lowest cost. If you're looking for a payroll service you can't beat abcpayroll.com. Ask for Deborah.

As an owner of the small business, it is not easy to take care of the finances and accounting errors. It is good to use small business accounting software, which is specially designed to simplify the monetary process. They can easily help to keep a track of income and expenses and stay focused towards client management.

Some of the best cloud accounting software for small business:

• QuickBooks

• FreshBooks

• Wave

• Xero

• Sage

• Zoho Books

• Myob

• Peachtree

• Intacct

But if you want to access the records from anywhere cloud accounting software is an ideal solution for small business accounting. Choose any software as per your budget and requirement.

Adrian
