Anyone Used Geographic Information Systems

I'm going to be working with Northwestern Mutual this summer and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with GIS. I had a pretty good class on this last semester. Basically, it lets you look at a map of anywhere and see neighborhoods based on certain demographics such as; age, income level, race, gender, and other things. I was thinking I would use this to locate the areas where I should do some marketing, coldcalling, or walk down and knock on some doors.
