Your rate is cheaper if you you are a secondary driver on a car that your father owns rather than the primary driver on a car you own. However, I do not think it works vice versa.

However, I do not think it works vice versa.

With some companies (not many) it can work vice versa because of the way they rate certain risks. I've had this happen before, where adding a driver decreased the premium. I've also seen where removing a driver can raise premium. I notice it more often when there are more drivers than there are vehicles.

It is rare, but with some companies, it does happen. I don't know about Travelers.

Having more drivers won't make the rate go down, it can make the rate go up.

However, having more than one car on a policy does save a lot of money because most companies offer multicar discounts. Some companies will give a 30% discount on the whole policy just for having more than one vehicle.

I'm not sure how other states work ( not sure if this applies to all companies either). It also depends on the situation.

Take for example: a young driver with 2 cars, 1 full coverage and the other liability only, adding an experienced operator to this policy would most likely bring down the rate.

when you have an inexperienced driver having an experienced driver on the policy always helps especially when their is only one car and the experienced driver is listed as the primary operator and the inexperienced driver is the occasional operator. And if possible never put an inexperienced operator alone on a policy with a newer car and full coverage because then you are looking at high rates!!!!

It's not likely but possible, as others have mentioned. Another instance where it might lower the rate is if you add a parent with an engineering degree, teaching credential, etc because some carriers will add a discount to the whole policy for that.
