Hi.

I hold a phd. in human physiology and I have specialized in shift work and the risks associated with shift work. I have no formal insurance related education.

What are the opportunities for me in the insurance business? Are such skills sought after in the insurance business?

Become a purchaser of insurance and buy lots and lots of it. :D

Why would you want to give up a lucrative practice to enter the, "beat your head against the wall" world of insurance?

Maybe you should visit one of your colleagues and discuss it. :D (Just kidding.)

All depends on what you want to do in the insurance business...

Do you want to be P&C (auto / home) or L&H (Life and health) or a combo of the 2?

Do you want to be captive or independent?

And there are about 100 more questions...

Most of the people here are sales people and it is not an easy gig. You have to learn how to sell and be able to take a lot of rejection.

If you are very good in math and statistics you may want to consider going back to school to become an actuary for insurance companies. It is a good gig but I am not sure if they have offshored a lot of the work.

Well. I was thinking of being an independent expert of some sort. An advisor for large scale insurance companies or the like. They must have an interest in seeking expert advice when taking out insurance for companies that employ shift workers.

I doubt that there is much opportunity there. You would be dealing with underwriting and I think they would mostly use historical statistics in the area of your expertise as a factor in calculating rates.

Looking for insurance on shift workers is so narrow as to virtually exclude you from employment in the insurance industry. If you want to expand your options, perhaps working with P&C carriers in risk management and loss prevention is an option. Workers comp carriers are a possibility.
