Highmark Announces Agreement
to Acquire Sole Ownership of Gateway Health

Highmark and Gateway Health have a nearly 30-year history of serving the Medicaid and Medicare communities in Pennsylvania. Highmark currently maintains a 50 percent ownership interest in Gateway Health and has always supported the Gateway mission.

This week, Highmark entered into an agreement to acquire sole ownership of the organization, pending regulatory approval from the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.

While Gateway Health will become an independently managed subsidiary and business unit of Highmark, they will continue to have their own identity, executive leadership team and operational oversight responsibilities. With the full backing and substantial resources of the Highmark enterprise, this change strengthens Gateway's ability to compete in the marketplace, and positions Gateway for future growth.

This news has no immediate impact on business operations or our working relationship. Both Highmark and Gateway Health will continue to run their own agent contracting, appointment and compensation systems. Agents selling both Highmark Medicare Advantage and Gateway Health products are required to complete each company's training and certification programs for plan year 2022. Our way of doing business together, and the success that we have had, is unchanged.

There are three BCBS' in PA (IBC/Capital/Highmark) and I always found it odd that only IBC offers a DSNP (through a subsidiary).

IBC services the "Philly 5" counties, while the other two cover most of the rest of PA, often overlapping areas.
