How Many of You Had One of These?

WOW does that bring back memories. We had the Atari! I always wanted a Comodore 64 but never could afford it. When I could finally buy my own computer I did better than a 64. The first computer I ever used on a regular basis was a NEC with a CPM operating system with a 150 floppy only for storage.

I had one of these....

Compaq Computer Corporation got their first portable computer on the market in late 1982.

The Compaq Portable sold for $3950, twice the price of its predecessors. However this was a small price to pay, for the privileged owner of a Compaq Portable was able to enjoy a blazing 4.77 MHz processor and 128 to 640 kb of memory.

The Compaq Portable was compatible with the IBM PC and MSDOS, making it more flexible than other similar offerings. Unfortunately it was even heavier than the Osbourne or the Kaypro. At 28 pounds many users likened it to a "suitcase."

My first family computer was an ADAM with dual tape drives...The family upgraded to a 286 with dual 5 1/4 disk drives and 512k of RAM. I had one of the drives removed and a used 30MB hard drive added for $300 and was told it was all the space I would ever need......

Back when I sold Hondas in the 1980s my friend/arch rival salesman bought a Kay-Pro 2 computer Kaypro II computer to track all his customers. I was very jealous until he was always in his office punching on that computer and his sales plumeted.

I waited until Windows 3.1 was out before I jumped in.

I bought 25 shares of Apple Computer as a new issue. I was just out of college (or just about to graduate) and I sold my shares within a month or so and took the gain of about a few hundred bucks.
If only...

Even two or three years ago it was trading at around $100/share, now it's at over $250!

I had the Panasonic version of that machine. 256kb memory, 2 floppy drives (I could have splurged and got the 10MB HD), thermal printer built in. And the real deal maker for me was the VisiCalc Spreadsheet program thrown in.
