I've been in this biz since 2003, A client asked me how far back does the MIB report go? I told him as long as he is honest it doesn't matter. But for my own knowlege how far back do they go with the MIB. Also how far do they go back for the script check for prescritions.

Thanks

I've never had a client ask. My answer would be 'for a lifetime', which probably isn't true if the client is over 30, but if something happened over 30 years ago and has no current symptoms, you are probably okay.

Checking with MIB though (Consumer Guide - MIB Group, Inc.)
I found the answer:

How long do MIB codes stay on my file?
Based on today's environment, MIB has elected to automatically and uniformly purge MIB records from our database after seven years.

Which is interesting, since you can be symptom free of some diseases for 7 years and still not be 'cured'.

Now you know.

Hmm, just out of curiousity, I wonder if the 7 year rule is based on the same rule that makes credit bureaus purge most data after 7 years?

It's been a long time since I was an underwriter, but I seem to recall MIB reports going back five years. Of course, the client should know that a report doesn't stay static for 5 years--every underwriter/doctor/hospital he sees is going to report findings. An original diagnosis or prescription may have been 6 years ago, but if he was underwritten for insurance 2 years later, then it might have been re-reported.

I think the RX says more about you then the MIB does.

You can tell a lot of things about a person by which meds they are taking or use to take.

Try this, goto mib.com and request a free copy of your mib and see what they have on yourself.

I thought MIB went back 5 yrs too but the link says 7.

MIB, Ingenix, Intelliscripts and other's collect their data from carriers, not providers. When a claim is filed a record is generated and collected by various data warehouses.

In post-issue underwriting carriers will also request doctors notes which will sometimes show things (such as Rx samples) that were not listed in the drug database.

Physicians and hospitals do not report to the MIB.

"MIB does not receive or collect information from doctors, hospitals, clinics or other medical or medically-related facilities."

MIB Privacy Policy - MIB Group, Inc.

I told you it was a long time ago :) We did enter information found in records we requested as well as information entered on applications--which was sometimes a problem when PIs didn't understand a question and answered it incorrectly.
