MVR and Driver Record

I hope the more experienced agent can help me based on their experience. Do you go by what the client tells you about their records or do you run their records for yourself before selling the policy? I know the insurance company check the drivers records but I don't want to sell a policy and the price get jacked up next week. I would be mad if it was me. Lol. One agent told me not to worry about the price of the policy getting jacked up.
Do you use a service to run driver information for claims, tickets and accidents? I know some insurance company charge you a fee to do so.

With most standard companies you can't bind the policy without first running the MVR. I usually add anything the customer tells me for quoting purposes, but don't run the MVR until the customer agrees to purchase the policy (companies charge you to run the mvr).

I rely on the insured's word and tell them "If there is anything else on your record then your rate will go up" and I very rarely have a problem. Things pop up all the time that aren't disclosed and usually the insured just pays the additional premium.

I don't run them because in my state the MVR is $27 a pop. Yep, $27! If the carrier is willing to eat it, then they can.

Some carriers do charge us (lookin' at you Progressive) if your client doesn't stay with the policy more than 30 days.

Wow! $27 to get a mvr from the state directly? That is crazy. In AZ, it is $3.00. Why is it so much?

yeah, $27 is insane!

In most states, as long as you sell a high enough percentage of the MVR's that you quote, you'll be fine. I never run the MVR until it's time to close the deal. People are going to lie to you about their driving record. No reason for you to have to pay for an MVR while you're only in the quoting process with that driver. Wait until he/she commits to buying the policy before running an MVR, and charges, if any, will be insignificant. (unless you're an agent in OK! dang Dubya! $27?)

Time is slowly changing things, more companies are charging agents for MVR's, and more companies are requiring MVR's being ran before binding. I'm afraid both trends will continue. :skeptical:

I used to have one carrier that didn't require an MVR being ran prior to binding. They would run MVR's on new sales at random. A lot of people caught onto this and tried to fly under the radar........ Not any more. They now require it before binding. They're getting tired of people bolting to another company after being caught under-reporting their violations.

I give the quote stating that the rate may change if any violations or accidents show up I do not run the MVR until they are ready to purchase If the rate increased because of MVR then I have other carriers that are more lenient for bad driving records but I run enough quotes with all my carriers that I have never had to pay for the mvr to be ran I have been told that here it is on average a charge back of about 6.00 a MVR also you can run it on your state website here . I have done this when the carrier pulls up something the client doesn't agree with then I have then go to the state site and run the mvr at their cost and if it different then what the carrier has then I submit it to the carrier this has not happened often but in most cases that this happens the client was happy to pay the 6.00 for the mvr and prove the driving record and keep the lower insurance rate.
