I always tried to call them right after I knocked the door. I would drive away, down the street and call about 5 minutes later. They wouldn't recognize my cell number because I didn't give it out.
I caught many clients that way.

I actually tried that and nobody answered. I didn't leave my card, but I will next time. I'll just scratch the lead.
I will usually call them right from the front porch. Of course if they are hiding they aren't answering the phone either. But if they are hiding I don't want to deal with them anyway.
I have had people answer the phone and say they didn't hear me knocking. I had one a few months ago where I was at the wrong trailer. I called from the proch and the lady I was supposed to see answered and said I wasn't at her door.
So I will call. If they don't answer and don't call back from that call then they are not prospects. Just time wasters.
If it's a scheduled appointment and they no show me I do not call them back. I leave my card so they know I was there. Now, if they call me later and give a reason for not being there or say they just forgot I will reschedule. But they have to initiate that call.
Another small thing you can do is when you get out of your car, wave really big at the house. If they are looking out the window (and trust me, some of them are), then they'll think you've seen them and feel they aren't hiding, and go ahead and answer the door.
I have to say though, I always did my best to get in touch with them after they've stood me up. It could be a few days later by phone or when I'm back in the area. Either way, I feel as though I've paid for a lead and someone is either going to die or tell me no, before I give up.
