Pre-Existing Condition and Changing Employment

Hello all. This is my first post here and I am in need of some seriously good advice.

My father was just diagnosed with Esophageal Cancel (Stage 1-2). He has just switched jobs from an employer who offered health (State Job) coverage to one that does not (Small Private Company). He is currently covered by United Healthcare (we live in Georgia) until the end of July. He is making a good living and paying for private insurance is not too big of an issue, but he is terrified that he will not be able to get private coverage (or continue with United Healthcare) because of his cancer. He told me he had called United Healthcare and they stated that he would have to let his coverage lapse and re-apply to continue being covered by them. Also keep in mind they do not yet know about the cancer diagnoses (but we assume they soon will and he isn't going to lie to them about it). To further complicate things he is going to have major surgery (related to the cancer) the 1st or 2nd week of July. I know next to nothing about Health Insurance and neither does my father. Basically my question is, what is the best course of action for him to take to stay insured and limit the amount of medical debt that he is going to incur. Thank you ahead of time for your input.

two things...what state are you in.....and do they have a risk pool.....

If your dad lives in GA he needs to take COBRA. After COBRA runs out he will either have a conversion option or the state of GA assignment plan.

Call or email if you need more detail.

If he lives in another state ignore the above.

Thank you to everyone for replying to my questions. I think we have figured out what we need to do and I will post again if I have any further questions.
