Quality of Mercury Insurance

I was hoping that I could get some help with my issue.

I currently have auto and homeowners policies with Farmers. A broker recently offered me a quote for the same coverage with Mercury. The cost savings is significant.

Of course my Farmers agent is telling me how horrible Mercury is and that they go out of their way to not pay, the Mercury agent is telling me how great they are and how they've improved over the last 5 years.

What's your experience? Is Mercury worth switching to?

Another option for me is to go with AAA which right in the middle between Farmers and Mercury.

What state are you in? If you're in CA Mercury is great. If you're in PA, pick another company. They are strong in the west. I've actually not heard good things about Farmers of late, but I don't have first hand experience with them.

We don't have Mercury here in CO , so I can't say anything about them. What I can tell you is that just about anyone will be cheaper than Farmers. Tell the broker that you're not 100% on board with Mercury, you want to know more about the company. Maybe see a quote from another company. OR... give the Mercury 1-800 # a call sometime. See if someone answers.. pretend that you have a billing question. See how long it takes to talk to a person.

I find it ironic that in one thread we have a poster calling auto insurance a "commodity" and in another we have another poster saying they won't buy it at the lowest price because of the reputation of the company.

Regarding Mercury, I'm a Mercury agent in CA and as BTFuzz said, they're a great company here. Most of the complaints that I see online about Mercury either: 1) stemmed from captive agents badmouthing Mercury and not actually from a Mercury customer or 2) are complaints about things that are handled by the agent. Find an agent that calls you back and you'll be fine.

I don't know about states other than CA though.

Thank you all for your responses.

Yes I am CA. Sure just like anyone else I'd love to pay for cheapest insurance, but what's the point of having any insurance if it doesn't what when time comes :)

Rick, thanks.

Are you suggesting them because they are good or because of their prices? Their quote actually came up higher for me than others.

I'm amazed. They saved me about 30% off my Mercury policy. Haven't had a claim but my research showed a very small complaint ratio - much lower than any others.

My 23 yr old son has coverage with them. If his record wasn't squeaky clean, they would not insure him.

Be sure you're comparing apples to apples. Their quote is for a one year policy. Most other carriers are 6 months.

Wawanesa rates have been slowing increasing. About 2 years ago, they were really good. Like Rick said, you need to have a clean record to be accepted by them.

OP, since you're in CA, I would go with Mercury if they're offering the lowest rate.
