Question About Disenrollment???

If someone dis-enrolled from a Medicare Advantage plan and later found out that they were declined by underwriting for a Med Supp plan after the Dec. 7. date. Can they reinstate their Medicare Advantage plan for Jan. 1, 2012 or are they stuck with Original Medicare without a supplement plan??? thanks in advance

Unless they qualify for an SEP they cannot get an MA plan. There a re many SEP's, so all may not be lost, but that's gonna be the only ticket.

I know it wasn't part of the question, but why the hell did they disenroll before knowing if they were approved?

Hey JD, thanks for the response.Because they needed to get a Part D PDP before Dec.7 date and answered all the questions NO on the app thinking they would be approved for the Med Supp.

Heres the scenario.... She has a Medicare Advantage plan w/ PD and wants to go back to Orig. Medicare with a Supplement and a Part D PDP plan, we submitted an application for the Med supp and she enrolled in the Part D PDP on Dec. 1 Enrolling in the PDP automatically dis-enrolled her from but Medicare Advantage plan and today December 9, I find out that she was declined for the Med Supp. Now she has only Original Med with a PDP and no Supp. How do I avoid this from happening in the future????? other than not selling any Med Supps during the AEP.

You might have screwed the pooch on this one.

The proper way to handle that would have been to let her make her MAPD choice for 2012 by Dec 7th.

Meanwhile, you get her application submitted for the Med Supp with an effective date of 1/1/12.

Once she clears underwriting and has policy in hand, she can then enroll in a PDP before Feb 14th... which will, in turn, automatically disenroll her from the MAPD.

Keep that E & O coverage in force.

Should have stayed enrolled in the MAPD or a new one. One approved for a med sup they could have disenrolled from the MAPD during MADP and picked up a stand alone PDP.

As it stands now they cannot get into an MA plan unless there is some trigger for an SEP.

I had a similar situation. I called and talked to a supervisor at Medicare. They told me that the MA plan disenrollment is NOT final until the new stand alone PDP is effective. So, if someone signs up for a new Part D plan before 12/7, but then changes their mind, they can call the PDP plan, tell them they do not want it and then also call the MA plan they had for 2011 and tell them they want to keep it as long as this is done by 12/31.

I realize that just because someone at Medicare told me this (they read this to me word for word from an official response script) does not make it true and or accurate, but that was the info I was told. I have been unable to get any confirmation from this in writing anywhere, but is does not hurt to try.

Good luck
