Setting Up an Online CE Credit School?

Every two years I do most of my CE credits online... Does anyone know how tough it would be to offer online CE courses? Do I just need to develop each course and get it approved by the states?

I have no clue how tough it is to get accredited by the states.

but financially it would be very difficult to start a school from scratch. big investment up front with no revenue coming in for quite some time.

plus, the competition is getting so fierce, it's becoming a race to the bottom as far as price.

I just finished my CE requirements for FREE (although I did pay a $5 transaction fee, which went to NIPR, not the school).

Do you want to try to compete against free?

I've never seen free.. But I've seen them pretty cheap. I'm guessing that they make $$$ on ads if it was free

The only way I know of to get CE credits for free online is to be part of an association.

Now I can find local CE classes that are free. They are usually put on by various carriers or IMOs. But Ive never seen online classes for free.

Basically yes. Each state has their own requirements for CE classes and instructors. Most (other than the LTCI certifications) are fairly lax.

But this is a full time job. Both regulations and products are changing all of the time. Not only do you have to stay on top of that, but you have to amend the courses and have them reapproved by all 50 states again. Then there is the website maintenance and marketing that you have to do. Im sure I am missing a few pieces of the puzzle too.

I think that it would be more feasable to do it just for your own state. It would be easier to maintain and market. Once you master your own state, you could branch out.

But to make decent money off of this, you would need a lot of volume. Personally, I wont pay over $50 for my 24 hours of CE credits. And that is every 2 years. I get cards in the mail all the time about local CE classes where they are charging $20 per class. They always go in the trash.

If you are lucky you might make $30 net off of my $50 payment every 2 years. I wouldnt think that would be worth if for just a single state.

So either go at it full time, or pay someone who already does it full time.

It may be different for L&H agents. but for P&C agents (esp. indy agents), there are carriers who subcontract through CE schools offering discounted prices.

I noticed one particular carrier's school offered a nice discount for purchasing the package (meaning enough credit hours to complete state requirements). I did this two years ago and got a helluva deal....

this year, I went through the same carrier and subcontracted school. but I noticed that if you didn't want to purchase the package, you could at least take up to two classes for free.....

as I browsed through the list of free class offerings, I noticed a 10 credit hour ethics class, and a 15 hour class of something else...

Done! 25 free hours, I only needed 24 to fulfill Ohio's CE requirement. I finished both classes in two days without having to change out of my pajamas. Most people overlook this because 90% of the free classes offered are only 2-4 credit hours each. But look at the ENTIRE free course catalog, and you may get lucky like I did.

BTW, I don't have any special privileges, nor am I hooked up with any associations. this is a well known carrier that many P&C indy agents have. they're just unaware of the opportunity being available.

I've never seen free.

you have now. but do not discourage the idea. it may still be a great idea, just in some other industry besides insurance. a lot of industries require CE classes that aren't so competitive.
