I'm doing a SWOT analysis on a fictitious health insurance company.
I have looked up several examples of SWOT on health insurance companies but they do not expound on some of the entries.

For example, the increasing medical costs as a Threat. I know with increased technology and procedures comes increased cost which is a threat to the insurance company by way of either having to raise the premium or reducing the cash flow of the insurance company.
But I am having trouble finding some explanations for the following:

Weakness:
Weak operating cash flows: I thought the profits of insurance companies were good. Does this mean that the cash flow they do get is being sit on? Are they not investing but holding on to in order to pay claims?[/font]

Shortage of healthcare workers: how is this a weakness for the insurance companies? Is this having to do with processing of claims on the hospital side?

Anyone know where I can find a good swot anlyasis for health insurance company?

Profits of insurance companies are no where near as big as the media makes it sound. The average profit is somewhere around 3%, I think, far less than many industries.

Rising health care costs is a minor threat to insurance companies, because it is the same for all. It's only a threat if there is a different exposure than other insurance companies. Now, rising utilization is a HUGE threat to insurance companies, with government intervention removing barriers to even further increased utilization (HUGE threat).

Read a health insurance companies annual report. They usually do something of a SWOT analysis within those (usually not labeled as such, but the info is there).
