$255 Death Benefit

Recently 2 widows mentioned during my FE presentation that they never received the $255 survivors death benefit. Of course, they wondered if they could still get it now.

I thought it was a good question and one that will probably come up again.

Here is the official answer from the Social Security website:

"Survivors must apply for this payment within two years of the date of death".

Usually the funeral director applies for it automatically. He can apply it to their funeral bill. They would normally make a point of telling the widow though.
