Battery Change in Pacemaker

Don't know why a battery change would be considered the same as implant surgery.. They are two totally different procedures. They don't even go near the heart to change the battery and it is generally done either with a local anesthetic or twilight.. The battery normally has to be changed every 5 - 10 years and is a very simple procedure..

I'm going by underwriting for Med Supps...I know the underwriting is different for FE. To be on the safe side, he should just call the company and ask them.

Of just answer the the questions on the application and not call? Maybe that's just me?
I guess if you do a POS you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

On Settlers app, it asks about heart disease in the Silver and Gold sections of the app. In the underwriting guide it says they consider pacemaker placement as heart disease. Wouldn't replacing the battery be considered surgery for heart disease?

The short answer: no. Placing the pacemaker may or may not work for their heart issue, and lends quite a bit of uncertainty to underwriting. Maintenance on a working pacemaker, where they change the battery, is just that: maintenance.

I can't speak for all carriers, of course, but agents in my office have run into this a couple times earlier this year and have been fine with FE products. Multiple carriers have told us 'not a problem', including I think UHL, Americo, and MoO. As always, your mileage may vary. :)

It says a "pacemaker implant" is considered surgery for heart disease.. A battery replacement is not implant surgery.. Implant Surgery is when they do just that.. "implant" the pacemaker.. It is at that time they attach the leads to the heart. . On a baterey replacement, they do not "re-inplant" the pacemaker. They do not even even get close to the heart as the pacemaker itself is normally located barely beneath the skin, just below the collarbone on the chest..

I'm convinced. Especially with Med Supps...if there's any gray area, I always call underwriting and I guess that's carrying over to FE. I just don't like surprises. I'm just really getting my feet wet in FE, and I can see that underwriting is different.

Well, even if what I say is correct.. and I certainly think it is.. ...that doesn't mean a home office will interpret it the same way.. Best to call before hand when in doubt .. In fact, I am going to give Settlers a call next week.. I have a friend that is scheduled for a battery change next month..
