Business Card Design Question--Please Weigh In

I'm a new agent, independent, and I need to get business cards. At the local office store, they have several pre-made themes for every conceivable type of business.

They also have non-business themes, like baseball. We are a big baseball family. My oldest plays competitive baseball. I like the baseball themed business card but I will be selling Med Supps. To old people. Who sometimes are confused.

Do I play it safe, not run the risk of confusing people, and go with one of the more conventional, albeit boring, "insurance" themes? Or do I say "the hell with everyone, I like the baseball theme so I'm getting a baseball-themed bus. card?" Is that unprofessional?

Ahhh. Here is what counts: will it cause me to lose sales, lose potential business if I go with the baseball theme? Or could I garner more than I lose with like-minded people? That is really the question.

Your opinion counts. If I get more than 3 replies, I'll probably get 4 opinions.

By the way, is it true Frank has a goat theme on his card or did I just start that rumor?

For seniors I would err for a more conservative design. Try and put something useful on the back. Mine has a tip calculator on the back, people ask for a card all the time because they like to have that when they go out to eat.

My card has a 1997 calendar on the back. For most of my senior clients it's pretty much the only year they can remember.

Make the cards with large font and be conservative.

Put a magnet on the back and tell them to put in on the fridge.

A business card's effectiveness in getting new business is likely overrated anyway IMHO.

I put my professional picture on mine and have been getting alot of positive comments about it. I enclose one in every Birthday card I send out so they always have one handy or they can give it to a friend or relative. Some of them probably have 3 or 4 of my cards but that's better then not having any.

I wouldn't do a baseball theme but that's just me.

If you REALLY want to use a baseball theme, try to come up with a catchy slogan that clearly says what you do but is also related to baseball. "Hit a home run with XYZ Insurance!" Or do a contest where every new client has a chance at winning 2 baseball tickets or something of the sort. If you really want baseball, make it fit...

I like Melissa's idea but it looks like the consensus of the group is pretty clear: I need to go more conservative & conventional.

I appreciate everyone's feedback.
