I am an agent in Colorado , I have discussed the merits of both sides of issue, I am interested in finding non captives to learn about my company but I want to get some feed back on opinions of being a captive or non.

While most captives are independent contractors, they operate very much like an employment situation. The questions you need to ask yourself:

1. Are you ready to run you own business which will require you to make key decisions?

2. Are you ready to invest in your business? This does not mean a thousand dollars, this means thousands of dollars and at least a few years to build it up.

3. Are you ready to have employees, keep accounting records and manage financials of the business?

Some people are and do very well at it, others do not and prefer to be the employee type. There are people who do have independent agencies, but bahave as employees. Essentially they do not do well because they don't know how to invest in their business and do not grow. Nevertheless read my guide to starting an Independent Agency, it will give you some insights...

Hmm. I think that there is still a lot left to be said on this issue. Thanks to my fellow advisors for the feedback

Let's face it I have seen some agent flourish under captive systems because they needed someone looking over thief shoulder holding them accountable.

That only exists on the independent side by how much the wife hitched about wanting to spend more money :)

Wrapping on a poll on this very topic for our organization - wanted to see what agents thought. 400 agents polled:

How did you get started?
Captive: 65%
Independent: 35%

If you started out captive, how long before you became independent?
Less than 1 year: 29%
1-2 years: 26%
2-5 years: 24%
Over 5 years: 18%
Still captive: 3%

If you were giving a new agent advice, would you recommend they start out captive or independent?
Start out captive: 54%
Start out independent: 46%
