I have a lady whose mother passed away a couple years ago. She said she knows she had a policy but has not been able to track it down.

Does anyone know a website that could locate it. She said she had tried going to the bank and checking with her local p&c agent.

Some options:

Go to her bank and research old drafts.

Look through all her old papers to see if you find any company names. The name of the insurance company is about all you need along with her DOB and name (and/or previous names), they can look it up from there.

Talk to her neighbors. She may have had a debit agent come around and collect the premiums, if so, they may have had the same company or as least know it from talking.

If it's an old company that has been bought out call your state's DOI and find out who bought them out. DOI's keep track of that stuff.

If she had a family lawyer you should ask him/her as well. Also talk to her pastor at church to see if she mentioned anything with them.

Some roads to explore, good luck. Remember that if it has lapsed doesn't mean that it's not good anymore. Extended term can keep a lapsed policy in benefit for years.

Edit: Mark's link is another good option
