Going with Northwestern Mutual Over MassMutual

They are selling MM life. I know...I could not believe it either. My friend at NWML is doing it and many others.

Yup... I'm with NMFN, and I'm selling a MassMutual WL policy next week to one of my clients...

Go independent, contract with Guardian, and stop giving away your commissions unless you really need the training and one-on-one. Anything NWM or MM does, Guardian does just as well or better and you won't be restricted to using just one or two companies. If you know a lot of other attorneys, Guardian's disability insurance is the best DI product available and an easy sell in a tough-sell market.

You can contract with Mass as a broker too. That's one reason to work with Mass as a career agent and then "go independent". You can continue to service your policies after you leave the career agency.

As much as you feel comfortable, please explain why you are doing this. Are you selling the MM policy to your client because of a case-specific need? etc.

As a newb I should add that I welcome any and all MM/NML WL policy comparisons. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I'd be very curious why you're doing that. I can't really think of a situation where someone would sell a MM over NWM policy or vice versus if captive.

It's an insurability issue. This client has had $750k of term with Mass for several years (also purchased another $500k of whole life with Northwestern several years ago)

He is now uninsurable, and has an estate planning issue, as he has been very successful over the years. He does not want his $750k with Mass to expire, ever, and so I am converting it to whole life for him.

Is it as good as what I could do for him if he were insurable through Northwestern, no, but it is still a wonderful product (2nd or 3rd best in the industry), and in his case, it is the best option available.

I don't make a practice of selling Mass over NML, but in this case, there was no option. I'm contracted through the brokerage side of a large Mass agency, and service several of their clients who are also Northwestern Mutual clients. There have also been times I've sold their long-term care insurance, as they offer a partnership policy in some states that NML does not, and in those cases, it's been right for the client.

I just met with Northwestern myself and they do allow brokering of business. The recruiter told me that alot of people think that they are captive but they broker alot of business.

"The recruiter told me "

Other statements you will hear from a recruiter...

"Of course I'll call you back."

"Of course you won't get pregnant."

"I'm just filming this for personal use."

"You'll never get called up."

and so on and so on.. ;)

Actually, recruiters do tend to call back. The hard part is to get them to stop calling.
