Hail Damage

You are not allowed to profit from a loss. If you wish to use a lower quality material, that is your decision, but the carrier does not have to pay you for the use of a higher quality material that you will not use.

If the carrier has agreed to replace the roof, they are fulfilling their obligation to you as an insured. If you replace the roof with like kind and quality materials, based on your statements, they sound willing to cover the costs, minus your deductible. They are not "ripping you off" as you put it, by not paying for a vacation on top of the actual cost of repairs.

This is why carriers pay out ACV (Actual Cash Value) until the repairs are completed. Insured's are not allowed to profit from a loss, and there is absolutely no reason for a carrier to pay out a settlement that is in excess of the actual cost of repairs.

By putting a cheaper roof on your home, you are more likely to have another lose sooner than later. Once the 2nd claim is filed (even if you go elsewhere), you get a big fat RED flag on your insurance clue history and possibly have a fraud unit up your behind.

It all boils down to the fact that when you go against an insurance company, you will never win. You will always pay your deductible first and thats just the way it is.

In concept, I agree with what you say here, but with a but...... The OP said he had a cedar shake roof, which is expensive to put on, expensive to maintain and provides no added benefit except for cosmetic. A lot of people end up taking off the cedar shake and putting something else on, not really an issue.

In fact, a true cedar shake roof is not allowed in most of the area I'm at due to the fire risks, though they still do imitation cedar shake.

You are forgetting one benefit. I had a cedar shake roof until I had it replaced and they are great if you love brown recluse spiders. We always had them in the house when we had that roof. The roofers that tore it off said there were millions of them in those shingles.

Haven't seen any since then. I kinda miss em.

It is not about "going against" the insurance company, and it is not about "winning". The insurance carrier is honoring their obligation by paying for the repairs to the roof. There is nothing to fight about or "win" beyond the OP trying to profit from the loss.

You should frame your statements a little better if you wish to be taken even remotely seriously.

Wait. Let me see if I get this right. The insurance company is willing to take care of your roof (all but the $1000 deductible you agreed on) and you are complaining that you won't walk away with money in your pocket? This is the reason insurance companies have to protect themselves the way they do.
