How Did You Know I Was Turning 65?

For those that run a good number of T65s, I'm sure you are asked this question often. How do you respond? Other than just flat out saying, "I bought a mailing list."

I work mostly T65 and get that question occasionally. I tell them "I subscribe to a service that gets information from public records. That's why you're getting all this Medicare stuff in the mail from all these companies." Seems to satisfy them. Got a call from one guy who led by telling me he was an attorney, then asked that question. After I replied with this answer he asked if his identity had been stolen and distributed. That took a little more explaining but at the end he was relieved there was nothing to worry about. Even said he'd keep my info for when he retires and gave me permission to call him back.

I like to just give them the short answer "the same way all the insurance companies know that have been sending you all the junk mail" and most of the time it satisfies them but some keep on about it.
I also let them know it's a good thing because without me, they'd have to understand Medicare and all the choices themselves in order to pick the best plan.

this seemslike a good way to handle that.

I say to them, "remember that warranty you filled out for a new refrigerator or stove years ago, they sell that information to lead companies who provide it to companies who sell these leads to agents, etc."

I believe this is a true statement as so how some of these lead companies get birthdates, addresses, etc. If not, please feel free to correct me.

Info brokerages pick up pieces of you from all over.

A consistent use of a name/address. Then they find that same information and the phone is included.

Then a date of birth or age shows up.

Then your consistent subscription to medical publications or membership in trade unions or... it continues until they have a pretty impressive picture of who we are and what we do for a living and what type of home we have and how much money we make...

Jut a bit here and a bit there.
