How Do I Sell Workers Comp

My office's handicap is that we do not have a reliable source to place our workers comp prospects. We are a nonstandard agency and we place much of business through general agencies. So far I have no problem writing other commercial lines.

As of right now my main channels for placing workers comp is through Superior Access, Smart Choice's SmartStart, and some general agencies.

Pretty much all of my worker comp apps have been turned down due to not having prior insurance or just high risk. The quotes I have been applying for are janitorial / electricians / tire recycling. Everyone has turned me down and referred me to the State Fund. Turned out the electrician was able to purchase a worker's comp policy through the Hartford at another agency.

My question is what am I doing wrong?

2 things:
- Get statefund as a carrier. No reason not to. This will let you place the stuff that is walking out the door right now. Okay, not all, but a decent amount.
- Make sure you are classifying people correctly. Odds are, this is why someone else wrote your electrician, which is usually not to hard to place.

Also, wholesalers tend to be picky on what they want to write. They sometimes turn down carrier acceptable risks. I've never really understood this, but I know they do. I think its some contractual issue they all have.

They wont get state fund . They pulled a crap ton of appointments a year or so ago and are not giving new ones out in CA. if you want access to the state fund there are a few GAs that have it . My agency is domiciled out of Sacramento.

Also call of Arrowhead General Agency. They will get you access in California to Everest, Travelers, Zurich, and the Hartford. They have a quick quote system online so you don't have to send apps in. We really only use them these days for Everest as we have direct appointments with the other mentioned carriers.

If you want to access state fund go to RIC general agency in Petaluma or State Fund First in San Francisco. They are the 2 GAs that are authorized to represent SCIF in California. For other non standard comp markets try all risks, appalachian underwriters or agency service bureau.
