I am making a career move into the insurance industry. I have been self employed at the same job for 15 years. I like working for myself and dread working for someone else. I wanted to know how much experience do I need selling and servicing clients before I could venture out on my own and get appointed with an insurance provider?

you call the company rep, have them send you an application and fill it out, then you fax or email it them and let then deny you.

You have a few choices:

1) You can find a General Agent. This forum has a few. I'd talk to a few to make sure you'll get training or at least something out of the deal. He gets paid off your business, so..

2) Go to a Career Agency, like Bankers Life or something like that. You'll be captive and can only sell their product.

3) Try an IMO. With an IMO, you're really on your own, but you'll typically get some better contracts. However, 0% of 30% is still zero. Keep that in mind.

My contracts are with Ritter Insurance Marketing. They have a quote engine and CRM for the companies they represent.

First, ask yourself- do you want to be independent or captive?

Captive agents typically get great training, support, and even a salary and benefits. However, they are limited to sell the products of the company they are appointed with, with very few exceptions.

Independents can sell for anyone, but the insurance companies that distribute via independent agents have to build bells-and-whistles into their products in order to get the independent agents' attention. That sometimes translates to uncomfortable conversations once the business in inforce. The commissions are also higher, but you receive less training, less support, and no salary or benefits.

For a more thorough explanation of these two primary distributions, and how they may affect the products that you sell and your relationships with your clients, read my article "Unknowingly Sticking It to Your Annuity Clients?" You can Google it, or go to my website at IndexedRockstar dot com and search off of the word 'unknowingly.'

This is an important choice, so I really admire that you are doing your research! sjm

Great advice! I assume your a team leader where you work?

Well, when you ask a half assed question, your gonna get smart ass comments....

You didnt mention WHAT kind of insurance you want to sell....

Auto? Home? Life? Health? Business? FE? Disability? or a bunch more......

It is extremely rare any agent writes everything, so you need to decide what you want to sell because that will depend on your options.....

And yes, I am an agency owner and have people working under me. :D:D:D

Other than the work or professional experience in selling insurance products, it is also an advantage if you undergone trainings or something like continued education to increase your competency. This will help you to boost your chance of getting hired.
