Medicare / Personal Auto Policy

Medicare Question? If you are on Medicare can you receive the medial payment benefit under your personal auto policy in the event of an accident?

Here is what I found when I did a search on this:

If you are on Medicare and involved in an auto accident, you can receive medical payment benefits under your personal auto insurance policy. Typically, your auto insurance medical payments coverage (MedPay) is primary, meaning it pays for medical expenses resulting from the accident before Medicare coverage kicks in.

After any medical payments from your auto policy have been exhausted, Medicare can cover additional medical expenses related to the accident, provided those services are covered under Medicare guidelines. Both your auto insurance and Medicare will coordinate benefits. Your auto insurer will pay the medical bills up to the limit of your MedPay coverage, and then Medicare will cover eligible expenses that remain after that.

Being on Medicare does not prevent you from receiving medical payment benefits under your personal auto policy if you are involved in an accident.

It’s essential to check the specifics of both your auto insurance policy and Medicare coverage, as there may be limitations or exclusions based on the nature of the injuries or services received. Additionally, auto insurance regulations can vary by state, so it’s advisable to consult with your insurance agent or a legal expert to understand the implications in your specific situation.
