Standard questions:

1) What were your thoughts about this business BEFORE you got your licenses?

2) What is the target market and products you thought you'd be selling BEFORE you got your licenses?

3) What target market do you have ACCESS to?

4) How do you plan to PROSPECT and MARKET yourself to your target market?

Once we have this kind of information, then the forum can make reasonable recommendations on where to steer you in the proper direction.

Good point. Also, do you have any sales experience?

In the same boat in SC. I just got my license last week. Trying to decide between two companies. Physicians Mutual and Mutual of Omaha. I think I need captive to start out.

Mutual of Omaha is not a captive agency. Selling MOO stuff is strongly encouraged through bonuses and incentives. I'm a career agent at MOO with my own DBA and multiple appointments. They have a marketing company (MOMCO) and they use BCH (Brokers Clearing House). If you must go outside, they want you to use BCH. I just got some Prudential quotes for a non-standard case last week. For group health insurance and ACA, I have another broker.

I chose MOO because I started as an independent. I wanted their training, admin support, and team environment (in my office anyway) to help me get over my phone fears and to learn from successful agents.

Some brokers use MOO and act like they're MOO agents. They're not. Make sure you're talking to a MOO GM or recruiter. Southeast Division Office - North Carolina & South Carolina Insurance - Mutual of Omaha

Hi; in addition to DHK and HVelocity's inquiries, I have one more. What do you expect to get out of the deal? Is it income? Or training? Maybe experience? When I have come across those who started the process of becoming an agent but failed, the common denominator was flawed training.
In our industry, you will only get the experience and corresponding income through proper training. Look for companies that have training programs that pay you while you train for the profession. Training time varies, but PROPER training is ongoing. The most successful of us spend significant time absorbing knowledge daily. It is a never-ending process!
