I started sales career selling the knives (Cutco)... got bored of it tried a few pyramid schemes in college. Graduated and at the time had no car so I figured I'd try out Merchant Services but I'm in Florida so that was the absolute pits even in January/February when its "cool" here.

I finally landed a salary position but after about 3 months in the cubicle I will spontaneously combust in there any moment. I like to work hard, i like to spend money, but above all I like a certain level of autonomy.

So I'm in a college town, Northwestern Mutual is here I figured I'd build a few months reserve, get my resume together and stop by; Is this a good company to start with?

I would say yes.

If you sold cutco knives that means you are not afraid to knock on doors.

Good point. If knocking on doors doesn't bother you, I'd go with Edward Jones. That is pretty much the way they start off new advisors. Also, of what you have mentioned, they are the most willing to invest in you to get you to succeed.

Go to a firm that has good training and then going dependent. Do not join Northwestern mutual. I was there for 10 years and before I went to Northwestern mutual I Artie had 10 years of experience in the business. I made the best out of a bad situation, I am now independent and would never go back to working for a firm like Northwestern mutual.

Northwestern mutual has been experiencing a lot of problems and they are only getting worse.

They will basically force you to do joint work with their leadership team, which are the college unit directors and basically the camp counselors for the new people, and you will basically be losing all of your relationships. Plus their payout is horrible
