NY Medicare landscape

It seems like a large % of doctors opt out of Medicare in NYC. Does anyone have a work around on this? Are any of the MA networks better than straight Medicare? Do most brokers find clients opting for Plan F, changing to different hospital systems that are in Medicare, or a combo of the 2?

I think this is very area specific and in Kansas/Missouri, the docs aren't going to opt out. While in NY (and other urban areas) its becoming more and more common. So if you are doc hunting in NYC, you've probably been dealing with this a lot more than you ever have before.

I have worked the NY area since I became an agent. AARP amd BC have the largest MA networks , AARP plan 1 and 3 HMO have a tri-state network.
There are a lot of other MA's with bad networks with lower premium and lower copays but I don't mess with those much

As far as supplement AARP UHC is the only game in town I have traditionally sold 80% Plan N 20% F but now they have G

As far as the doctors that don't accept Medicare these doctors generally (90% of the time) don't take insurance at all, If they do its very limited to high end policies

I let them know in this situation that no MA or Med Supp will help that but the Med Supp will allow the most freedom as some of the specialist heart and Cancer places like sloan kettering does not accept any HMO and PPO is generally out of network copay

So if these are the concerns Med supp will give the best option only other option would be to not get medicare at all,

Most are going to get medicare anyway and most people who are concerned about the doctor that does not take medicare are not even going to the doctors that don't take medicare anyway as these are very high end doctors

The ones that do usually end up changing Doctors, I have a few that pay out of pocket

Also very important the AARP PPO plans are made for upstate NY network is terrible in the burrow's and Long Island and is non commissionable in those areas

Thanks for the insight .It's kind of what I figured. Med sups are pricey also!

Most people who are not MA people will not balk at $180 plan N in NY, There is nothing to shop no competition. If they understand, Otherwise I present AARP hmo plan 1 and 3 or BC occasionally Aetna depending on what doc takes, However I still end up 70-80% med supp

I have not marketed in NY except for occasional mailer when FMO kicks into it, But I still have a good amount of referrals there
