Prospecting Letters

"Any letter you use should be approved either by the state insurance dept. or the company you are selling for"

Why would Insurance Dept approve any marketing letters? They are not in such business. In my opinion, the letter has to be approved by insurance company i) if you're captive agent, or ii) if you're naming the insurance company in your marketing letter. I'm not even sure about (ii)

Generally, a letter will call for report if it doesn't meet the ethical standard of the state e.g. you're criticising other agent/companies.

If I'm indepependent agent and sell five different insurance companies products, it will be heck of a job to get the letter approved by all five companies.

Can you give more details of why were you reported and if you were captive at that time.

I have used prospecting letters. They work well IF you know you have the lowest rate on any given product. Ask them to verify that it is, in fact, the lowest rate. Of course it should be a good, well established company. Any letter you use should be approved either by the state insurance dept. or the company you are selling for. I mailed out a non approved letter several years ago, someone reported me and I was called on the carpet. I lost some sleep over it and never did it again. Your competition in another area will report you just to get rid of their competition ( that is my belief ). Make sure ALL letters are pre-approved.
