This Cold Calling Stuff is Hard Eh :-/

Got my first try at cold calling yesterday. Had a list of people who did not respond to our mailer and had a script asking to speak to them and explain im calling about the un-returned mailer. My heart was pounding the whole time but I think I sounded pretty good on the phone. I'm not quite perfect with the script however and made a few mistakes forgetting what to say and what not. All in all i left a ton of voicemails, got hung up on twice, told not to call back twice, and asked to call back at a later time twice. Still alive. All you cold calling pros, were u nervous your first time calling too? how long does it take for it to become a more natural conversation for you?

Don't know that I have ever gotten to where I don't have butterflies when I cold call. :) But, why you may think you don't sound like you are speaking naturally, your prospect doesn't think that. For one thing they don't know what your natural speech pattern is since this is the first time they have talked to you. The key is to not let your nervousness stop you from making the calls.

For the brief time I did it, I was scared. I was actually shocked to find out how (a) easy it is after a while, and (b), how boring it gets to wait on a dialer.

I think what helped was to have a script that made sense to how you interact with people on a regular basis. M&M had a good script he suggested in an earlier thread -- basically a non-threatening opening question to get an idea of how they feel about their MedSupp prices.

Try not to put so much pressure on yourself when you are starting out buy looking at it as practice. Just make the calls and you will get better at it. 99% of cold calling is picking up the phone and not putting it down until all of your calls are made. Somewhere between the first and last call you will relax and the conversation will flow more naturally. The more often you practice, the sooner it will happen after the first call, or even on the first call. Sometimes I would get a warm-up by calling a client or two first, just to get the juices flowing, and then immediately call a prospect.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. This was a list of ppl who didnt respond to our mailer. So the managers told us its more of a practice type thing, get u out of your comfort zone. We didn't even have many numbers. But I did search the white pages for the names missing a number and chug along anyways. Today I made a few more, felt alot more relaxed, but was having trouble thinking about what to say next. But im not letting nerves stopping me from making any of the calls. I crashed into a tree going 70 after a girl hit my car while cutting me off, if that didnt kill me, cold calls won't;) ill check out that post by M+M (aka eminem?) sorry about typos and grammer, exhausted. quick post.

It certainly takes some time to get used to it. One of the best things I did was pick up a list and started calling through it without any expectations. These people weren't going to hurt me, worst case scenario I was no worse off than I started. After a while I got the swing of it and started having fun.

I'm a huge fan of dialers and even if you're just starting out it can be a great tool because it helps you avoid getting psyched out by the process of dialing. When you're calling it's almost like playing russian roulette because every time you punch in a number you don't know if someone is going to psychologically shoot you. A dialer just has them coming at you fast enough that you don't have time to get in your head too much.

Are they going to have you cold call more? If you visit Free Telemarketing Scripts For Everyone! I have a giveaway for 50 free cold calling prospects. Free practice if you're interested.

Who has the best dailer plan? I have checked out MOJO and such. But the prices are all over the place. It would be nice to find a place that includes data.

I have used this one for the little time I spend cold calling. It works well for me.
Predictive Dialers
They do have data available but I would recomend data from Josh to load into it. This is not an indorsement for VIP but an option I do not see on the forum very often. It's user friendly and handy for me to make a few calls on a saturday or evenings. You do not have to do the contract unless you intend to do a lot of cold calling. I don't.
