Underwriter or Claims?

My gut would say underwriting over claims. Glassdoor always has some useful insights, but keep in mind the people who bother to go online and write reviews are generally the ones who have something to complain about, not the ones who are happy. Because of that the average rating and salary are generally lower than the actual norm. You can click around more from the base link to reviews and whatnot.

Claims reps have caught up in the last decade. When I first was clawing my way in they were only offering $30K-$35K to start in claims.

Underwriting is good if you have management ambitions (they'll send you to any department for that) and intend to get a designation to boost your chances of promotion.

Claims, while appearing to pay less...from what I've heard, thanks to generous overtime (think cat claims times) the reps tend to make their base pay in 8 months time (or less) but it is a hell hole and you'll likely be stuck at entry level there, as the supervisors are promoted from other departments to include claims.

I've been in the insurance business 20+ years. The ONLY job I've never done?

Claims

It's hard enough working with the general populace when they're having a good day sometimes. Imagine how hard it is when they's just had a terrible day.

Of course, if you feel that claims better suits your personality - go for it! The world, and the business, needs all types of people for all sorts of jobs.

Good Luck!
