What Type of Printer Do I Need?

Seems everyone likes their Brother printers. I do the Brother except for a couple of things. 1st off, the cartridge carriers tend to create error messages in many of the models. 2nd and maybe most importantly, if you don't do much with color you won't have to replace it very often. But once you do need to replace it, then nothing works, you can't even print in black. You'll then have to buy that color cartridge you didn't want to buy. I don't know of any other manufacturer that builds their printer that makes you use your color cartridge. Glad I got rid of my Brother and will never go back there again. HP is the better way and so is Lexmark. As a matter of fact, I've had more troubles with HP than with any Lexmark I've ever had.

I've got a bunch of them.

I would say for an all around printer, scanner copier, fax the HP 7780 is a great choice. For an inkjet it is very fast and the ink usage is MUCH better than my other HPs. I bought mine as a refurbished one from Staples and I can't tell it from new. Got it for about half of regular price and they deliver to your door.

I also have a large Dell color laser that I do large mailings with. Great for letter size paper but useless for anything else.

If you are printing lots of letters that need envelopes, I would also get a small black and white laser printer that will always be set up for envelope printing. It's cheap and saves you from having to switch paper back and forth from your main printer.

I generally prefer HP stuff because I think their stuff is usually a little better. I do not like ink jets because they use ink like crazy. Kodak has two new ink jets that supposedly use about 1/4 of the ink and the ink is pretty cheap. Anyone try one? They are inexpensive. I was considering one. Staples has them.

BTW - HP owns the printer technology while their partner Canon has the ink/laser ink technology. The money is made on the ink/laser cartridges.

My brother is a laser, so the cartridge is not an issue. It is also only Black and White and a damn good copy machine. The fact it prints and copies duplex, both sides, is also important to me. I have a color laser HP, but I hardly every print in color. If I only had one it would be this Brother 8860dn.

I have gone through many inkjets. The cartridges are expensive. I have refilled them, but that is a hassle. the HP's remember the last two that were in it so you need 3 in order to fool it into taking a newly refilled cartridge. I am so done with inkjet.

I have a Brother MFC 7420 in my home office. I bought another one for my son's home office. It prints, copies, faxes, and scans.

We buy generic toner cartridges on ebay in cases of 10. It costs about $200 with shipping or $20 each. We used to pay about $80 when we bought them one at a time at Staples (and that was the store brand).
